Unit 1 focuses mostly on the Scientific Method, Experiment Design & data collection, Graph Analysis, and Writing a good conclusion. For the Scientific Method we learned the steps of the Scientific Method which are define the experiment, design the experiment, testing, data analysis, and conclusion. For experiment design and data collection we learned about the different types of variables, qualititative and quantitative data, outliers, average, and uncertainty. For graph analysis and conclusion Mr. Ozeni taught us how to read and analyze different types of graphs (linear and non-linear, slope, and relationships). A good conclusion should include the answer to the experiment question, and uses all the evidence (averages) to prove your conclusion is correct. We will also do many projects like the rubber band trajectory project.
8th Grade Science Standards Covered:
Scientific progress is made by asking meaningful questions and conducting careful investigations. As a basis for understanding this concept and addressing the content in the other three strands, students should develop their own questions and perform investigations. Students will:
- Plan and conduct a scientific investigation to test a hypothesis.
- Evaluate the accuracy and reproducibility of data.
- Distinguish between variable and controlled parameters in a test.
- Construct appropriate graphs from data and develop quantitative statements about the relationships between variables.
